I love to read about languages learning habits! :)

I try to always balance between oral/writing/reading so as to progress more steadily. Not easy because I have no one to talk to (I'm a self-taught but I've been a french as a foreign language teacher).

My best habit is to learn songs bc I write lyrics, learn them, sing them... it's a complete lesson gathering quite all the linguistic skills. It helps me to learn popular language and to implement grammar rules.

I learn brasilian portuguese, actually I started very long ago with songs and later with courses at uni. But this year I finally started to read my favorite brasilian writer in brasilian. And I write to her. :)

Maybe you've heard about the information gap? It's the piece of information that's missing you and motivates you to ask for anything in daily situations. I used to apply that to create learning games for kids (like card games where you have to ask things in order to win).

Thanks for bringing this topic, I realize how it feels good to talk about our passions.

What language(s) do you learn? :)

That's a really good point^ I recently read that we should consistently assess which methods are falling behind (e.g. if your writing & reading is great but speaking needs some improving) and sharpen em up as needed... I imagine it as a pie chart with 4 slices that should be mostly equal.

That's such a cool idea! I took a Spanish class when I was living in Ecuador and one day she had me translate a song. I ended up translating a song I had written for a girl 😅 so that was a vulnerable session but very cool. Such a cool practice I forgot about. Though I will say... many songs don't make sense or have strange sentence structure and therefore may not be ideal for language learning.

I haven't heard of the information gap! That is so cool, thank you for taking the time to share this! Gave me lots to think about (:

I'm actively learning German, and I want to learn Mandarin & Japanese but learning Mandarin feels like it would be full-time job for the rest of my life 😆

:) Actually I would like to learn Japanese one day but as you said, I have the same feeling that I would have to dedicate all my life to this language... and I can't choose! So I have still not started, I keep learning about culture and that's all.
