My favorite type of tea (right now) is pu’er (pronounced poo-AHR, not “poo-AIR”) and sometimes spelled pu’erh. The correct spelling of pu’er tea? 普洱茶

Have you ever had it? There are two types: sheng (raw) & shou (cooked). Shou pu’er has my heart forever, especially in the colder months. Here are some of the reasons I love pu’er.

• You can brew it for 5 seconds or 10 minutes, and it never gets bitter. It remains smooth and has no edges like other teas.

• The color of its liquor is gorgeous – from espresso so dark you can’t see through it, to a deep wine color.

• It’s medicinal. I try not to ever make sweeping health claims about tea. But shou pu’er is basically fermented tea, so it has healthy microorganisms which support digestion.

• It’s meditative. I enjoy each of the types of tea at different times of year and in different settings, but for meditation & contemplation, there is no match for pu’er. It has a grounding & sinking energy which makes me feel present & connected. I can sit with pu’er for hours.
